100 Reads

Stoke 100 Reads was introduced to promote a love of reading for pleasure amongst children throughout Stoke-on-Trent and to encourage families to read together. Children, parents and teachers across Stoke-on-Trent voted for their favourite 100 books for children to read before they leave primary school. This year we shall continue to encourage children to complete the challenge.

Nursery and Reception Challenge
Nursery and Reception children are challenged to read the first 25 books on the Stoke 100 Reads list to receive a copy of Barry the Fish with Fingers: Tickle Hide-and-Seek to keep! When a child has completed the challenge their completed checklist can be taken to any of of the six libraries in Stoke-on-Trent to claim their copy of the prize book.

KS1 and KS2 Challenge

Once children have read the first 25 books they can continue to work towards to reading all 100 books. This challenge should span across a child’s time at primary school and we would not expect the majority of the children to complete the challenge until Year 6. As some of the themes in some of the books are not suitable for younger children we have made the decision to spilt the remaining 75 books into year group lists. There shall be three different lists Year 1 & 2, Year 3 & 4 and Year 5 & 6. If you feel that the year group list is not appropriate for your child please speak to your child’s class teacher to obtain an alternative list.

Children will be provided with the relevant year group lists inside the cover of their brain builder book. Children and parents are welcome to sign off any books they read last year towards the challenge. If a child successfully reads their year group books they will receive a certificate and a raffle ticket to place in the 100 reads box for their year group and at the end of each term a winning ticket will be drawn from the each of the box and the winner will be able to choose a prize book to take home.

It is crucial that children learn not only to read fluently but can comprehend and understand what they have read. With these comprehension skills in mind children will also be given the opportunity to complete an ‘Accelerated Reader Quiz’ on a number of the titles. The titles that children can quiz on are highlighted in blue on the various checklists. These short electronic quizzes assess the children’s comprehension of key elements of the book’s content.

Can you read them all?

Children who read every title on the Stoke 100 Reads list can claim a special limited edition copy of Roald Dahl’s beloved classic, The BFG and receive a certificate for their achievement. The beautiful gift books have been donated to the Stoke Reads campaign by Penguin Random House and retail at £20 each.

We do have a limited number of these books in school but once these have been awarded the book can then be claimed at any of the six libraries in Stoke-on-Trent, when children or their parents show their completed Stoke 100 Reads list.
We look forward to seeing how all the children progress with this challenge.
